The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Austin District, presents this databook as a tool for local and regional elected officials, professional engineers and planners, interested citizens, and policy stakeholders alike. The purpose of this document is to provide information to assist in the development and assessment of transportation infrastructure, services, and policies within the Central Texas area. The databook is just one tool in providing information for decision-making that helps develop plans and projects for the region to move people and goods safely and efficiently through our communities.
Central Texas' growth outpaces regional, state, and national trends. This databook helps to pinpoint key areas that are experiencing rapid population growth. Growth patterns can fluctuate with economic cycles and areas that have traditionally enjoyed strong growth can suddenly suffer.
Efficient transportation is essential to the Central Texas region. This databook examines transportation in numerous ways. First, the databook takes an in-depth look at the current conditions of the Austin area. In Chapter Two, the Austin area is compared to seven peer cities in order to examine similarities in demographic and transportation data. In the third chapter, a mobility analysis is performed to observe the current state of congestion in the Austin area. Chapter Four provides a cursory examination of the most recent census data for each of the eleven counties in the TxDOT Austin District. Finally, this databook looks at the 13 largest employment centers in Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties. Almost half of all Central Texas jobs are located in these job centers. The databook also looks at where people reside in relation to where they work and their modes of transportation for their travel to work.
This databook strives to examine the area's transportation needs from a regional perspective by examining regional trends in transportation infrastructure, commuter behavior, and the effects these factors have on congestion for area drivers, which creates problems for all consumers. This databook is a valuable asset for policy makers, and concerned citizens looking to better understand what drives transportation decision making.
